... a little scared

What I'm tryin to recover from right now, is the fact that I gave everything to someone who really had nothing to give in return. We both thought there was something, but clearly there wasn't.

I was about to post our IM conversation when I decided there really wouldn't be a point to it. Same shit, different day, ya know? Instead I got online and went to my girlfriend's website. She is one of the strongest women I've ever met in my life and I admire her more than I can even put into words.

So, as I'm surfing I find a link on her page; an article about the pitfulls of the concept of an "ideal partner". The article featured the text below.

Let there be space in your togetherness,

And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love.

Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Fill each others cup but drink not from one cup.

Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,

Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.

For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.

And stand together yet not to near together;

For the pillars of the temple stand apart,

And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

From The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

I think this is something I need to keep in mind from now on if I'm going to get involved with anyone else. I'm not bitter, just cautious... and a little scared.
